Providence Photonics designed two pipeline survey vehicles used by BP to ensure pipeline integrity in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska.  Each vehicle is equipped with infrared imagers which can be operated remotely from the cab of the vehicle to conduct thermal surveys and identify hydrocarbon plumes.  Custom continuous zoom optics extend the reach and capabilities of the infrared imagers.  A co-located visible camera with 32x optical zoom gives a reference for the low resolution infrared video.  A gyro stabilized gimbal provides continuous 360 pan capability with stable video from a moving platform.  Heating elements on the optical bench and windows allow for continuous operation in temperatures down to -50C.  A shock mount system protected the camera payload from the harsh road conditions.  Visible and infrared videos are archived and geo-referenced with location data collected from an on-board GPS antennae.  The entire system is powered by a rack mounted inverter/battery supply which allows for continuous operation while the vehicle is running and 4-5 hours of operation on battery power.
