PEER Insitute
The PEER Institute is a non-profit research organization affiliated
with Providence. It was founded in 2005 and is dedicated
to finding scientifically solid, technically practical, and economically
efficient ways to manage our environment.
Research Areas
- Particulate matter in ambient air
- revisions to the national ambient air quality standards
- Urban area ozone issues
- Air toxics
Research Capabilities
- Development of integrated systems for monitoring ozone precursors
and air toxics. The integration focuses on (1) real time (as events
of interest occur), (2) short analytical cycle time, and (3) total integration
including sensors/analyzers, data acquisition, automated control
and communication, system mobility, data visualization, and data interpretation.
- Fundamentally new approach to ambient air particulate matter (PM)
management, including new metrics for PM measurement, design
of new PM sampling systems, relationship between PM metrics and epidemiological
observations, and ambient air PM standards.
- Visualization tools for air quality modeling and monitoring results.
- Prototype of air quality related monitoring and control systems.
Funding sources
- Grants
- Contracts
- Philanthropic gifts
Although the PEER Institute and Providence have their different
missions, they leverage each other’s strength to achieve their
goals. Providence brings real world problems to the PEER
Institute and serves as proving ground for concepts and technologies
developed by the PEER Institute. In return, it will be the first beneficiary
of solutions and technologies developed by the PEER Institute. By affiliating
with Providence, the PEER Institute has access to over $3
million in assets that are important to its research.
The publications by researchers at the PEER Institute can be seen in
the Download area.
